Everything you need to perform a calm, correct Lakshmi-Ganesh puja on Diwali night — samagri, sequence and mantras.

Diwali Puja Vidhi at Home — The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Diwali is not a single ritual — it is a five-day arc, with the main Lakshmi puja falling on Amavasya night. Done well, it is the calmest, most beautiful evening of the year.

Prepare the space in the morning. Clean the puja room, wipe every surface, and lay out a clean red or yellow cloth on the chowki. Place the Lakshmi and Ganesh murtis or images at the centre.

Assemble the samagri: kapoor, ghee, akhand jyot wicks, agarbatti, kumkum, chandan, akshat, kalava, five varieties of sweet, a few flowers, a small bell, gangajal, and a printed or memorised paath.

In the evening, light the akhand jyot first — this should burn from sankalp through the entire night. Then light two smaller diyas at either side of the chowki.

Begin with Ganesh vandana, then Lakshmi archana. Offer akshat, kumkum, chandan and flowers to each murti. Recite the Lakshmi ashtakam or your family paath. Close with kapoor aarti — first for Ganesh, then Lakshmi.

Finish by placing diyas at the entrance, windows, and balcony. The invitation to Lakshmi is not just the ritual — it is the entire home glowing at once.

A trusted ritual is built one steady habit at a time.
